Baby Boomers Are Shocked; Millennials are now number 1

time2016/12/27

Toy Industry Baby Boomers must have indeed been shocked as this article drew a multitude of readers in April.

The Baby Boomers' long run as the largest generation in American history has come to an end. Today, a day of infamy for the Boomers, the Millennials passed them with a population of 75.4 million humans compared to the Boomers who are now in second place with 74.9. That is according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Pew Research Center and as reported by the Washington Post and other outlets.

The Baby Boomers who brought you Hippies, Yuppies and Yippies have been displaced by the Millennials who have brought you Social Media, Apps, Bernie Sanders and certainly far more to come. For the purposes of the analysis, Boomers are anyone who is from 51 to 69 years old while Millennials are 18 to 34. To show you how big the Millennial generation is, Generation X (people 35 to 50) will not pass the Baby Boomers in numbers until 2028. Its not easy be sandwiched between two generational behemoths.

Baby Boomers have, due to their sheer numbers and generational audacity, had an enormous impact on the latter half of the 20th century. Millennials,a generation that does not love cars but does love anything mobile and digital, will define the 21st. And for that reason they will have an outsized impact on government, society, culture and yes, the toy and play industry.
